Managing Editor Moriah Richard explains the importance of maintaining a focus on diversity, equity, and inclusion in publishing and provides resources.

Let’s get this out of the way: I’m not here to debate politics.

It’s simply a fact that publishing is an ecosystem and that disruptions in the ecosystem affect all of us, whether you’re an aspiring author, a bestseller, an editor, an agent, or a publisher. With the new administration targeting DEI initiatives across the board, now more than ever, we need to continue fighting for representation at every single level of our industry. When we lift one group up, we all rise.

[How a Reading Audit Can Elevate Your Writing]

What is DEI?

If you’re not familiar with the term, DEI stands for diversity, equity, and inclusion. At it’s most base, this is DEI means according to Merriam-Webster:

“1: a set of values and related policies and practices focused on establishing a group culture of equitable and inclusive treatment and on attracting and retaining a diverse group of participants, including people who have historically been excluded or discriminated against.

2: the state of having a diverse group of participants as well as policies and norms that are equitable and inclusive.”

Essentially, DEI programs are focused on making sure that as many people as possible can feel seen, heard, and respected, regardless of their race, ethnicity, sexuality, gender identity, religion, disability, etc. When these programs are in place, they uplift the historically marginalized, but they also do things like protect straight, cis-gendered women from harassment and discrimination.

Everyone benefits from DEI initiatives. Full stop.

[Courageous Discomfort: Thoughts on How To Have Important Conversations About Race and Racism for Writers, Readers, and Other Human Beings]

Importance to Publishing

In the last few years, we’ve seen an explosion of conversation around diversity in publishing, from the statistics of white authors being published and marketed at higher rates than non-white authors to authors releasing information about the advances that they were offered by publishers.

At its base level, publishing needs diversity in order to survive. People get tired of reading the same story, seeing the same faces, looking at the same tropes. By reading works by authors who don’t share the same identity as yourself, you open your creative world to new and dynamic ideas, story structures, conversations, and characters. It makes you look at yourself and your writing in a new, exciting light. You find ways to enhance your authorial voice, discuss difficult topics and themes, and create memorable characters. It’s why we have a course at Writer’s Digest University called Read Like a Writer; there’s a lot to learn by studying the works of others!

The way we get this diversity is by giving all authors a fair chance at having their work published and marketed so that they find their audience and have the chance to keep writing and publishing.

But it’s an enormous task that will not—cannot—happen overnight. It’s a process that we need to take on one step at a time.

Resources for Getting Started

There are a ton of great resources out there for writers and other industry professionals, but I know it’s overwhelming. If you don’t know where to start, I encourage you to check out some of these resources. They can get you started thinking about how you can effect change in our industry, and how you can become a great literary citizen, uplifting others and keeping our ecosystem alive and healthy.

Language Guides

These kinds of guides are helpful to get you thinking critically about the language you use and how it can possibly affect your work. Here are some of my go-to’s:

Conscious Style Guide

Disability Language Style Guide

The Trans Journalists Association’s Stylebook and Coverage Guide

Networking

These networking sites are helpful for those who are seeking mentorship, connection, and resources within a specific community.

Latinx in Publishing

People of Color in Publishing

Disability in Publishing

We Need Diverse Books

Indigenous Journalists Association

National Association of Black Journalists

National Association of Hispanic Journalists

Crime Writers of Color

Databases

These databases are wonderful resources for people who are looking to hire editors and writers.

Editors of Color Database

Black Editors and Proofreaders

Disabled Writers Database

Writers of Color

Change starts on the individual level. It’s up to us to create a healthy, harmonious writing and publishing ecosystem. Hopefully these resources give you a jumping-off point to develop your literary citizenship!

Over the past several weeks, we’ve shared our 101 Best Writing Websites for 2024. Creating this list is a year-long project that involves an overwhelming number of bookmarked sites on our browsers. There are so many great websites for writers—with more popping up practically daily—it’s no wonder this is still one of our most popular features after 25 years.

This year, as always, you’ll find a blend of sites that are useful to writers of all types, abilities, experience levels, and genres. Some websites have been on this list for more than a few years now, because they consistently produce quality content that never disappoints, alongside other sites that are still fairly new but have already made a name for themselves. Additionally, we’re pleased to include 12 websites that appear on the list for the first time.

As with all of our recommendations, we do our best to ensure the details in the listings are accurate at the time the issue goes to the printer, but inevitably something will change. So, be sure to check the websites themselves for the most up-to-date information.

We hope this list helps you find the resources you need to improve your writing, find a community, and get your work out into the world.

A * means this is the website’s first appearance on the WD list. All listings within each category are alphabetically arranged.

Here are the top indie publishing websites as identified in the 26th Annual 101 Best Websites from the May/June 2024 issue of Writer’s Digest.

A * means this is the website’s first appearance on the WD list. All listings within each category are alphabetically arranged.

1. Alliance of Independent Authors (ALLi)

SelfPublishingAdvice.org

The ALLi Advice Centre should be on every indie author’s “favorites” toolbar. Whether you want to find out if a competition or potential publishing service is a scam or if you’re looking for guidance on a particular piece of self-publishing, the blogs, guidebooks, podcast, and courses will help you out. Become a paid member to take full advantage of everything they have to offer.

2. Author Level Up

AuthorLevelUp.com

Author Level Up is indie author Michael La Ronn’s site dedicated to helping other indie authors navigate the indie publishing experience. With courses, writing guides, and more videos than we can count, there’s nothing that Michael doesn’t cover. Plus, he includes a list of recommended resources with writing and editing tools and apps, podcasting equipment, and more.

3. David Gaughran

DavidGaughran.com

Historical fiction author David Gaughran has dedicated his time and talent to helping fellow indie authors. He’s authored several books on the subject, including Following, which can be accessed for free by joining his site. He also releases a weekly marketing newsletter, offers a free course on book promotion, and hosts a blog dedicated to topics like Amazon category hacks and the five steps of book editing.

4. Independent Book Publishers Association

IBPA-Online.org

From its humble Southern California beginnings in 1983 to being the largest publishing trade association in the U.S., IBPA is a nonprofit dedicated to self-publishers, indie publishers, and small presses. Boasting more than 4,000 members, IBPA offers both free resources—such as industry news, book formatting templates, and more—as well as paid-member resources, like discussion forums and access to the IBPA Slack channel.

5. Indie Author Project

IndieAuthorProject.com

The Indie Author Project helps to connect library patrons with indie-published books. “Authors are able to submit e-books directly to their local public library to then be vetted by industry editorial partners (such as Library Journal, Publishers Weekly, and others) and librarian editorial boards. Being selected by these curators can lead to expanded discovery, marketing, and networking opportunities.” The site also features an archive of webinars with industry experts.

6. The Indy Author (Matty Dalrymple)

TheIndyAuthor.com

Author Matty Dalrymple shares her expertise on her blog, which focuses on a wide variety of craft and business topics, like how (and why) to go straight to Barnes & Noble. The podcast hosts special guests from editors to freelancers to authors to discuss indie-specific topics. The site also offers suggested resources for authors, as well as access to her paid-for coaching services for a more individual approach.

Here are the top writing community websites as identified in the 26th Annual 101 Best Websites from the May/June 2024 issue of Writer’s Digest.

A * means this is the website’s first appearance on the WD list. All listings within each category are alphabetically arranged.

1. Archive of Our Own

ArchiveOfOurOwn.org

Archive of Our Own (also called AO3) is an archival nonprofit created and run by fans across 62,000 fandoms. This resource is dedicated to archiving, fan fiction, fan art, fan videos, podfic, and more. As of January 1, 2024, the site hosts 12,290,000 works. Many authors cite AO3 as the place where they learned to hone their writing skills, bolstered by feedback from fellow fans and writers.

2. Association of Writers and Writing Programs

AWPWriter.org

AWP aims “to amplify the voices of writers and the academic programs and organizations that serve them while championing diversity and excellence in creative writing.” They do this by sharing information about careers; contests; writing programs, conferences and centers; and hosting the yearly AWP conference.

3. Community of Literary Magazines & Presses

CLMP.org

If you’re interested in working with a small publisher or are on the hunt for a home for your short stories or poetry, search the database at the Community of Literary Magazines & Presses which includes hundreds of listings. Plus, check out their awards, events, and news sections for up-to-date info on all three.

4. Gutsy Great Novelist

GutsyGreatNovelist.com

One year after adding Gutsy Great Novelist to this list, it’s still one of the most engaged and supportive writing communities we’ve seen. With neatly organized groups for specific topics like how to make time to write, the craft of writing, the business of publishing, and a “café hangout” as a catchall, you’ll easily find other writers to bounce ideas off of and share best practices.

5. Kweli Journal*

Kwelijournal.org

Since 2009, this quarterly online literary journal has operated with the mission to nurture emerging writers of color that “sing the truth” (kweli means truth in Swahili). Their site also hosts the Sing the Truth! blog dedicated to interviewing authors of all genres. Kweli also runs year-long writer fellowships, multi-session workshops, writing retreats, individualized editing, and an annual writers’ conference and international festival.

6. Lambda Literary

LambdaLiterary.org

Lambda Literary has led the way in recognizing and elevating LGBTQ+ writers and readers for more than three decades. Established in 1987, this organization offers book reviews, a writer’s retreat, and banned books resources, among more—including the annual Lambda Literary Awards (known as the “Lammys”) which celebrates more than 150 authors across 25 categories.

7. London Writers’ Salon*

LondonWritersSalon.com

While it may say “London” in the name, this is actually a worldwide community of writers who gather virtually for hour-long writing sessions each weekday. With four time zone options, no matter where you are, you’ll find writers to support you. Sign up for one of their paid memberships to take advantage of additional offerings like workshops, office hours with experts, and accountability groups.

8. r/writing

Reddit.com/r/writing

Without signing up for a free account, writers can still access and read the message boards of this online writing community that cover a wide range of topics like whether prologues and epilogues are necessary, deciding to change point of view midway through a draft, and how to self-promote your work. With an account, writers can make their own topic threads and participate in others.

9. The Internet Writing Workshop

InternetWritingWorkshop.org

While this website may not look as pretty as some of the others featured on this list, it more than makes up for it in the quality of the content and community. Join the lists that interest you to submit your work for critiques; critique the works of others; and discuss the craft of writing or marketing your work.

1. Funds for Writers

FundsforWriters.com

One of the few websites to remain on this list for more than two decades, C. Hope Clark’s Funds for Writers is a don’t-miss resource for writers who want to be paid for their work. This site is one of the most comprehensive collections of markets, grants, contests—all of which pay writers. Sign up for the newsletter to have new listings delivered to your inbox weekly.

2. Sonia Wieser’s Opportunities of the Week Newsletter

OppsOfTheWeek.com

For freelancers looking for new opportunities, this weekly newsletter is one of the best! Sonia Weiser—herself a professional freelancer—realized that she has a knack for finding calls for freelancers, and in 2018, she decided that instead of sharing what she found on social media, she would create this newsletter. The suggested rate is $5, but freelancers in need can reach out and get a sponsored spot.

3. The Writer’s Job Newsletter

TheWritersJobNewsletter.com

Keep your writing momentum and your income steam going with from The Writer’s Job, a free weekly newsletter connecting writers with writing jobs fit to their needs and expertise. The jobs are paid, fully remote, and are sent to your inbox every Sunday. For $1/week, you can get a second newsletter of opportunities each Wednesday.

4. Who Pays Writers?

WhoPaysWriters.com

Who Pays Writers? is a fully anonymous crowd-sourced database run by the Freelance Solidarity Project. Founded in 2012, this resource contains “information about compensation, the format of articles published (print or digital), copyrights purchased by the publication, and whether or not the publication issues contracts to its writers.”
